On March 4, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke before the US Congress about the need for a "global New Deal". This idea has been embraced by the majority of the world, and a need for a global long term solution to a global systemic crisis would appear self-evident. But in the US, the opposite sentiment reigns - that the US has been taken advantage of and impoverished by the very global trading system it created, and that it's time to put Americans first. Buy American provisions were originally inserted by Democrats into the stimulus bill, and diaries calling for various protectionist policies are becoming ever more prevalent even here at the DailyKos.
The time has passed that America can curl up into a ball and pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist, or to dictate global policy by setting it unilaterally within its own market and expecting everybody to follow suit or be excluded. The time is now for global cooperation, regulation, long term thinking, and for multinational corporations and cross border capital flows to be regulated internationally. Progressives of the world, unite!
